Tonatiuh

Tonatiuh was the sun god presiding over the current cosmic era, the Fifth Sun. According to legend, the world had previously undergone four cycles, each ending in catastrophe. The Fifth Sun began when the gods sacrificed themselves to set Tonatiuh in motion, an act that required continuous human offerings to sustain his journey across the sky.

Ometeotl and the Four Tezcatlipocas

Ometeotl, the dual god of creation, embodied both male and female forces, birthing the Four Tezcatlipocas, who shaped the cosmos. Tezcatlipoca ruled over night and fate, while Xipe Totec governed renewal and sacrifice. Quetzalcoatl brought wisdom and wind, and Huitzilopochtli embodied war and the sun. Together, they created and destroyed worlds, weaving the cycle of existence.

The Aztec Underworld

Mictlan was the Aztec underworld, where most souls traveled after death. Over four years, they faced nine levels of obstacles before reaching final rest. Ruled by Mictlantecuhtli and Mictecacihuatl, Mictlan was neither heaven nor hell but the inevitable destination for those who did not die in battle, childbirth, or sacrifice.

The Aztec Empire

The Aztec Empire (c. 1428–1521) dominated Mesoamerica through warfare, tribute, and religion. Its capital, Tenochtitlán, stood on Lake Texcoco, connected by causeways and filled with temples and markets. Ruled by the Mexica alongside Texcoco and Tlacopan, the empire controlled vast territories. However, internal strife, European diseases, and the Spanish conquest led to its collapse in 1521.
